Cops probe lawyers allegedly harassing forensic doctor in detainee death case

KUALA LUMPUR: Police confirmed that a forensic specialist who was allegedly being harassed by several lawyers in connection with the death of detainee Noorizwan Zulkefly lodged a report.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Comm Datuk M Kumar said the case was being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code, as well as Sections 186 and 189 of the same Code.

"The doctor is a public servant and a police report has been lodged by him. Investigations are ongoing, and police are recording statements from the relevant parties," he told a press conference at Bukit Aman here on Monday (Nov 2).

He said police had recorded statements from the doctor and three lawyers linked to the case. The process of recording statements from Noorizwan's family members was ongoing.

On Noorizwan's death, Comm Kumar said the investigation papers would be referred to the Attorney General's Chambers on Wednesday (Nov 4) for further action.

Comm Kumar had earlier said that the investigation into Noorizwan's death had been taken over by the Criminal Investigation Department's Prosecution/Legal Division (D5) at Bukit Aman and was being investigated under Section 331 of the Penal Code.

The classification was made following statements recorded from the forensic medicine consultant at Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz, who conducted the post-mortem examination and confirmed external injuries on several parts of the deceased's body.

The injury patterns were consistent with blunt force trauma and were not self-inflicted.

However, the full post-mortem report to establish the cause of death has yet to be obtained, and the police are awaiting further information.
