Road safety is a collective responsibility, says Lam Thye

PETALING JAYA: Exercising discipline is a crucial component towards ensuring better road safety, says Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.

The Alliance for a Safe Community chairman stressed that it was everyone’s responsibility to abide by the set rules and regulations, adding that a collective approach was needed to ensure safer roads for all.

“There are thousands who lose their lives due to road accidents. This is a serious concern and it's high time for everyone to be extra committed towards road safety,” he added.

Lee said road safety was not solely the responsibility of the government, stressing how communities also could play their part in educating road users on road safety.

He added that the Cabinet proposal to reduce the speed limit at school zones from 40 kph to 30 kph was a step in the right direction.

“More importantly, enforcement must be strengthened and send a message that this is a serious matter and there is no compromise for violations,” he said.

Lee also hoped that road safety habits can be improved for gig workers, especially p-hailing delivery riders.

“They contribute to the economy but at times, can be riding in haste in order to meet the demands of employers and customers.

“Hopefully employers can sit down with authorities and gig worker associations to address the issue of road safety,” he said.
