Home Ministry mulls regular staff rotation after five Immigration officers nabbed

PUTRAJAYA: The Home Ministry is seriously considering carrying out personnel rotation involving government agencies under its purview more frequently, says Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

Despite the repeated stance against anti-corruption, the Home Minister said graft cases still occurred.

Saifuddin said he has taken note of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's suggestion that heads of departments (HODs) implement staff rotation regularly to avoid cases of misconduct among public officials.

“In fact, when the Prime Minister spoke about it (on Aug 16), I immediately contacted the Ministry’s secretary-general to find out what agencies are under the Home Ministry.

“Job rotation will help us reduce the potential of disciplinary offences.

“We will look into the aspect of placement. It doesn’t mean that officers who served long at an agency are prone to integrity violations. But, this is a form of administration and management,” he said during a press conference after attending the Home Ministry’s monthly assembly in Putrajaya on Thursday (Aug 22).

On Aug 16, when announcing a pay raise for civil servants, Anwar said all HODs will be subjected to disciplinary action, including ineligibility for promotion, if they fail to report their subordinates’ misconduct.

Anwar also suggested that HODs implement job rotation regularly to avoid cases of misconduct among public officials.

On Tuesday (Aug 20), five Immigration Department officers were arrested at KLIA by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki had said the anti-graft agency recently busted a syndicate bringing in foreign nationals to the country without inspection, where four company owners and five Immigration officers were arrested.
