Construction sites a hazard for bikers

JOHOR BARU: Ongoing projects and roadwork here are posing a safety hazard to motorcyclists, with some even causing life-threatening situations.

University student Hakim Mohd Zain, 23, said he was almost thrown off his motorcycle due to potholes and poor safety measures around project sites.

“There are worksites that are poorly lit and with no clear warning signs about maintenance work. Having proper lighting is important.

“I have also passed through a project site with blinding spotlights being used,” he lamented.

Hakim said the high number of projects in the city creates risks to mainly motorcyclists, citing the Rapid Transit System Link project.

“There are just too many projects going on at the same time.

“There are also many lorries carrying construction material moving in and out of project sites.

“The congestion it causes prompts drivers to cut queue and change lanes dangerously,” he said, adding that one near miss is enough.
