KOTA KINABALU: A marine policeman was injured after his work partner is believed to have accidentally discharged a shot in his direction while on duty in Lahad Datu.
The lance corporal hurt his finger and stomach following the incident at the district's marine post on Tuesday (Aug 25).
Lahad Datu OCPD Asst Comm Dzulbaharin Ismail said they received a report about the matter on the same day.
“It is believed that both the victim and his partner were on duty when the accident happened. The partner was said to be unloading the firearm prior to the incident,” he said in a statement Wednesday (Aug 26).
He said the victim was sent to the Lahad Datu Hospital for preliminary treatment before he was referred to the Tawau Hospital for further medical attention.
ACP Dzulbaharin said the case is being investigated under Section 37 of the Arms Act 1960 for discharging a weapon leading to injuries.
He said investigations on what exactly happened were ongoing, and called for the public to refrain from speculating or spreading unverified information over this case.
