56 containers used as workers’ quarters destroyed in Wangsa Maju blaze


KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 56 containers, converted into foreign workers’ quarters in Wangsa Maju, were destroyed in a fire.

Wangsa Maju Fire station chief M. Lethumanan said Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department operations room received the distress call at 9.08am on Wednesday (July 24).

"A total of 21 personnel and officers were deployed to the scene.

"The fire involved containers converted into quarters for foreign workers as well as storage areas to store worker belongings," he said in a statement today.

He said firemen had to use “offensive” and “defensive” measures to control the fire from spreading to nearby buildings.

"A total of 56 containers were 100% burnt in the fire.

"We were able to bring the fire under control by 10.27am and we managed to put out the fire at 12.02pm.

"No one was hurt during the incident and we are still investigating the cause of the fire," he added.
