Two vessels collide in Johor waters, SAR op ongoing


KOTA TINGGI: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has activated a search and rescue mission following the collision of two vessels in Tanjung Balau here.

MMEA acting director-general Vice-Admiral Datuk Saiful Lizan Ibrahim said the incident took place at 6.55am on Friday (July 19).

“The vessels MT Hafnia Nile and MT Ceres 1 collided at 25 nautical miles (46.3km) northeast of Tanjung Balau.

“A search and rescue mission was launched to look for the missing crewmen involved in the collision,” he said.

The search and rescue team arrived at the location of the crash at 9.50am, he added.

“The mission is ongoing and a press conference will be called on Saturday to update further on the incident,” Saiful Lizan added.

He also said that the Department of Environment had been notified of the incident and for necessary actions in the event of an oil spill.

The Abu Bakar maritime base nearby was also ordered to monitor the area as a precautionary measure.
