Traffic cop injured by drunk driver in Johor

JOHOR BARU: A traffic policeman suffered a serious injury after being run over by a drunk driver at KM3.6 Jalan Pantai towards Permas Jaya, here.

Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said the incident happened at 7:05 a.m. on Sunday (July 14) when the victim was conducting traffic control at the location.

“The victim, in his 30s, was directing the traffic from an unrelated accident involving a car that had crashed to the right side of the road.

“While the vehicle was being towed away, another car driven by a man in his 30s made a sudden lane change from right to left.

“The policeman, who was standing at the left side of the tow truck, was thrown onto the front windscreen, then flung into the air and fell in the middle of the road,” he said in a statement.

ACP Raub said a breathalyser test showed the driver was drunk.

“He tested negative for drugs,” he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 44(1)(b) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence of alcohol.

“We also would like to request that any public witnesses who saw the accident come forward to the traffic police station at Johor Baru South District Police Headquarters to provide their statements,” he added.
