PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia is ready to deploy assets to help Indonesia address fires contributing to the current haze situation, but is awaiting confirmation before mobilising them, says government spokesman Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil.
He said the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) Ministry and Wisma Putra had informed the Cabinet that the list of assets had been conveyed through diplomatic channels.
"However, so far, there has been no confirmation on any form of cooperation involving the use of Malaysian assets to help put out fires and so on," he told a press conference after the Cabinet meeting here on Wednesday (Sept 9).
Asked if Malaysian-owned companies operating in Indonesia could be held accountable if they were found responsible for activities contributing to transboundary haze, Fahmi said the matter was not discussed in detail by the Cabinet.
Fahmi, who is also Communications Minister, said the haze situation in Sarawak appeared to have improved slightly.
However, he said conditions remained dependent on the weather as well as the occurrence of hotspots and open burning, particularly in neighbouring countries.
