KOTA KINABALU: A Croatian climber who went missing after presumably taking an off-path route to scale Mount Kinabalu several days ago has been located, with rescue attempts ongoing.
According to sources, the 46-year-old man used a route from the Mesilou village area to attempt the hike without anyone knowing.
The route is not managed by Sabah Parks, and the man apparently decided to explore on his own, they added.
It is learnt that the man claimed he has over 10 years' experience climbing mountains without a guide, and was confident he could tackle Mount Kinabalu as well.
He had apparently fallen off a slippery slope and injured himself later during the climb, forcing him to call for emergency help.
Search and rescue officials had difficulty pinpointing his location.
When they located him, they faced another challenge – weather and visibility – as well as determining the best way to get him to safety.
At the time of writing, rescuers are still trying to retrieve the fallen man.
