Specific laws needed to combat menace

KUALA LUMPUR: More specific laws are needed to effectively curb cyberbullying, says Tan Sri Razarudin Husain (pic).

The Inspector-General of Police said that for now, the force has to rely on different laws to deal with the problem.

“We will investigate cyberbullying under the Penal Code if it involves extortion and threats, and we will probe it under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for uttering insults and crude words,” he said when contacted yesterday.

Razarudin said he had met with Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil on the matter.

“Both the Criminal Investigation Department and the Commercial Crime Investigation Department were in attendance.

“We really hope for a more specific law to deal with cyberbullying,” he said.

Fahmi, who is the government spokesman, had previously said that the Prime Minister wanted the authorities to come down hard on cyberbullying and directed the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to do more to stop it.

Cyberbullying grabbed headlines again last week after the death of an influencer who was allegedly harassed online.
