Workshop under investigation for failing to provide quotation to consumer

IPOH: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry is investigating a car repair workshop in Ayer Tawar, Manjung, for allegedly failing to give a consumer a quotation for its services.

The ministry's Perak director, Datuk Kamalludin Ismail, said investigations conducted at the workshop on Thursday (July 4) found that the owner failed to provide a complainant with information about the services they received.

"The owner failed to produce a price list for the repairs when requested by the complainant.

"We took action after receiving a report from the complainant, who was not satisfied with the charges incurred for the services," he said in a statement on Saturday (July 6).

Kamalludin said the investigation was conducted under Rule 6 of the Consumer Protection (Workshops Information Disclosure) (Amendment) Regulations for failure to give a written statement to the consumer before and after the repair services are conducted.

"If found guilty, the workshop can be fined up to RM100,000 or RM200,000 for subsequent offences.

"The owner could also be slapped with a maximum fine of RM50,000 or jailed up to three years or both," he said.

"The ministry is serious when it comes to businesses that run their operations unethically, as we want to ensure the rights of the consumers are protected," he added.
