43 Vietnamese nabbed at bird's nest processing outlet in Negri

JEMPOL: Police have detained 43 Vietnamese working illegally at a bird's nest processing outlet here.

Jempol OCPD Supt Hoo Chang Hook said the foreigners, who were also found to have overstayed, have been remanded for 14 days to assist in investigations.

"We had conducted surveillance at a premises in Bahau for several days and conducted a raid on June 8.

"We then found the 43 foreigners including 20 women cleaning and processing bird's nests in the premises," he said in a statement.

Supt Hoo said a section of the three double-storey shop lots located at a commercial centre had also been converted into a hostel for the foreigners.

"There were 18 rooms for the workers inside the shop lots.

"Checks showed none of them had the necessary work permit to work there," he said.

The foreigners will be probed under Section 55B of the Immigration Act 1973 and Rule 39(b) of the Immigration regulations.

Supt Hoo said a 47-year-old suspect believed to be the business owner was subsequently arrested.

"The suspect will remain in remand till June 16," he added.
