Ops HUU: Traffic obstruction most common offence, say cops


KUALA LUMPUR: Traffic obstruction has been the most commonly committed offence, with 15,705 summonses issued in the first seven days of the "Respect Traffic Laws" (HUU) operation in the city.

Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) chief Asst Comm Saifudin Mohd Salleh said that as of Monday (June 10), a total of 21,169 summonses had been issued in the operation, which started on June 4.

"The most common offence is traffic obstruction, with 15,705 summonses, followed by stopping at a pedestrian walkway (1,102), not having a license (678), expired road tax (450), illegal number plates (336), and stopping in the yellow box (29).

"Besides that, we also issued 40 summonses for not having vehicle insurance, not wearing helmets (64), no number plates (156), no side mirrors (248), using a mobile phone while driving (111), not displaying the 'P' sticker (167), expired licences (107), malfunctioning brake lights (13), and illegal modifications (39)," he said when contacted on Tuesday (June 11).

ACP Saifudin said police also detained 38 individuals.

"We also seized five motorcycles and a lorry," he said.

More than 2,642 police personnel were involved in the operation, assisted by other enforcement personnel from various agencies including the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and Kuala Lumpur City Hall, he said.

"We are strict in this enforcement operation as we aim to spread more awareness of the importance of respecting traffic laws and regulations.

"It is vital for all road users to adhere to traffic laws at all times, not only for their own safety but for the safety of others as well," he said.

ACP Saifudin said the operation focused on 12 locations around the city.

The locations involved are: the junction of Jalan Dewan Bahasa/Jalan Hang Tuah, the junction of Jalan Sultan Ismail/Jalan Bukit Bintang, the junction of Jalan Sultan Ismail/Jalan P. Ramlee, the junction of Jalan Sultan Ismail/Jalan Raja Abdullah, the junction of Jalan Sultan Ismail/Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, the junction of Jalan Dang Wangi/Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, the junction of Puduraya/Jalan Tun Perak, the junction of Jalan Sultan Ismail/Jalan Imbi, the junction of Jalan Sultan Ismail/Jalan Raja Chulan, the junction of Jalan Sultan Ismail/Jalan Ampang, the junction of Jalan Sultan Ismail/Jalan Raja Laut, and the junction of Jalan Tun Perak/Jalan Raja.

"We hope the operation will also lead to better road ethics among road users.

"Besides safety, the operation is also important to ensure smooth traffic, including during non-peak hours," he said.

Among the offences that will be focused on are traffic obstruction, using a mobile phone while driving, running a red light, and speeding, he said.

"We hope the public will cooperate and adhere to traffic rules and regulations," he said.
