Targeted subsidies will save the country, says PM

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has defended the government's decision to implement targeted subsidies, saying that it was done to save the country.

He said that the government was forced to make several unpopular decisions just for that benefit.

"Who wants (to implement) targeted subsidies? We must realise that whatever we do, we will be attacked with all sorts of lies and accusations.

“All prime ministers before this had agreed to implement targeted subsidies but there had been no political will to do so.

"This is done to save the country, we are left with no choice," Anwar said at the Prime Minister's Department monthly gathering at Dewan De' Seri Endon, Puspanitapuri on Monday (June 10).
