Ex-Umany president fails in bid to quash charge of disobeying cop


PETALING JAYA: A Magistrate's Court here has dismissed an application by former Universiti Malaya Association of New Youth (Umany) president Wong Yan Ke to quash a charge of disobeying a police officer.

In the dismissal, Magistrate Shahril Anuar Ahmad Mustapha said the court had scrutinised affidavits and submissions in the application.

"The court hereby dismisses the application.

"The case will go on trial on June 26 and 27," he said here on Friday (May 31).

Deputy Public Prosecutor Asmaa' Zamri appeared for the prosecution while lawyer Shashi Devan represented Wong.

On Nov 13, 2020, Wong pleaded not guilty to a charge of disobeying an order from Asst Supt Lee Robert to stop recording a video during a police raid at a house at Jalan 17/48, here on Nov 7, 2020.

He was charged under Section 188 of the Penal Code and faces imprisonment of up to one month or a maximum RM400 fine or both, if convicted.

It was reported that a 24-year-old man was detained during a police raid conducted at a house here in connection with the sedition investigation involving Umany.
