KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) made history by becoming the first public institution of higher learning (IPTA) to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) under the leadership of Datuk Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh.
The MoU, signed by Ahmad Terrirudin and UUM vice-chancellor Prof Dr Mohd Foad Sakdan, coincided with the 20th anniversary of the Bachelor of Law with Honours (LL.B) programme at UUM, held on Monday (May 27).
The MoU encompasses the AGC offering attachment programmes to students from UUM's School of Law, providing them with valuable practical experience, and opportunities for sabbaticals or industrial training for UUM academic staff and legal officers.
The AGC will also provide UUM with the opportunity to nominate top graduates from its School of Law for consideration in the Green Harvest Programme candidate list.
This MoU also serves as a platform for collaborative research, studies, and knowledge sharing in the legal field between UUM academic staff/legal officers and the AGC, as well as human capital development programmes aimed at fostering students' interest in the legal field.
Additionally, this MoU signifies the beginning of a collaboration with the AGC in various academic endeavours, including research, legal training, short courses, joint conferences, symposiums, and consultations organised by UUM.
In a statement Tuesday (May 28), Ahmad Terrirudin said the AGC is committed to implementing the MoU for the advancement of the nation's legal system, as demonstrated by the presence of several senior AGC officers at the event.
"This is the first MoU signed by the AGC with an IPTA since I became Attorney General, and I hope that similar collaborations with other IPTAs will follow.
"The AGC's top management always provides opportunities for officers to enhance their knowledge for career development, and I see this collaboration with UUM and other IPTAs in the future as one of the best mediums to achieve this goal,” he said.
During his speech, Mohd Foad expressed UUM's pride in establishing a strategic collaboration with the AGC.
"This is the goal we want to achieve, which is to realise the main objective of transforming higher education in Malaysia to face new challenges by leveraging the value of 'deep knowledge,' skills, and talents among UUM and AGC members.
"I sincerely hope that this strategic partnership can be utilised to its fullest potential by all parties and become a catalyst for various joint programme planning and implementation in the future,” he added. - Bernama
