Sarawak Legislative Assembly observes a minute's silence for Mutang Tagal


KUCHING: The Sarawak Legislative Assembly has observed one minute of silence for the late Senate president Datuk Mutang Tagal.

Deputy Speaker Datuk Idris Buang called on assemblymen to pay their respects at the start of the afternoon's sitting on Friday (May 10).

"It is with utmost sadness and regret that I have to announce that Dewan Negara president Datuk Mutang Tagal has passed away.

"It is humbly requested that all elected representatives show our greatest respect to the late Mutang by giving one minute of silence according to our respective beliefs," he said.

Mutang passed away at 11.46am on Friday at the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur.

Meanwhile, state Deputy Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Sebastian Ting said he was deeply saddened by his friend Mutang's death.

"We had a legal practice in Miri 40 years ago and we knew each other very well.

"One happy memory was on Sept 9, 2017 when we both received our datukship from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in Kuala Lumpur," he said.

Ting said Sarawak and Malaysia had lost a great man.

"We were very proud that he was the first Dayak to be appointed Senate president.

"It was a great honour for the Dayak community and Sarawak," he added.
