Army foils bid to smuggle 12 tonnes of onions into Indonesia

SIBU: The Malaysian Army's First Infantry Division (1st Division) foiled an attempt to smuggle 12,300kg of Holland onions into Indonesia on Tuesday (May 7).

Two local men aged 32 and 53 were also arrested during Ops Awas/Keris Parang for suspected smuggling activity in Bau, near Kuching.

"At 9.30pm, army personnel were on patrol at an oil palm plantation in Bau, about 400m from the Indonesian border," the division said in a statement on Wednesday (May 8).

Its team detained two lorries carrying the onions, worth an estimated RM35,000, heading towards the border.

The suspects were driving the lorries, the statement added.

"The onions and the two vehicles worth a total of RM181,500 were seized.

"The two men and the seized items were handed over to the Bau police station for further action," it read.
