MOTORHOMES are increasingly becoming popular with Malaysians, especially for balik kampung during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations, Kosmo! reported.

The daily said the “moving hotel” can accommodate up to eight passengers and is equipped with various amenities such as beds, a toilet, a kitchen and television, providing comfort during long journeys.

Malaysian Campervan and Motorhome Association president Farman Othman said the perception that motorhomes are exclusively for the elite is incorrect.

He said owning a motorhome does not require a large investment, as those interested can start with the financial resources available to them.

“There are many types of motorhomes. Some are made from vans – there are even those made from a Perodua Myvi. The investment depends on the owmers,” Farman said.

“Some buy them as imported or reconditioned models, particularly from Japan or the United Kingdom. These models also come in various price range.”

Commenting on the rising preference for motorhomes, particularly during the festive season and school holidays, Farman said the vehicles are convenient, especially during traffic congestion.

He added that while the vehicles do not need a permit, users who intend to build their own motorhome are still required to submit the plan to the Road Transport Department.

“One needs to have a plan first if they want to build their motorhome. This plan then needs to be submitted to a registered agent to obtain JPJ approval.

“Back in 2016, when motorhomes were first introduced, the government did not require an Approved Permit, which is why ownership has been increasing.”
