Three charged with illegal waste dumping in Pontian


JOHOR BARU: Three men have been charged at the Sessions Court here with dumping construction waste at unauthorised locations in Pontian last year.

Tan Hock Lai, 45, Chia Vui Shan, 30, and Wong Wai Heng, 49, were charged separately before Sessions judge Datuk Che Wan Zaidi Che Wan Ibrahim on Wednesday (March 27).

According to the charge sheet, Tan was accused of dumping solid waste at Lot 2030 near Mukim Rimba Terjun in Pontian at around 2.30pm on June 20.

Chia was accused of committing the same offence at Lot 5877 GM 6012, also at Mukim Rimba Terjun in Pontian, at around 1.25pm on Aug 15.

Meanwhile, Wong was charged with the same offence on government reserve land at Mukim Jeram Batu in Pontian at around 11am on July 4.

All the accused are charged under Section 71(1) of the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act 2007 punishable under Section 71(8) of the same Act.

The offence carries a fine of not more than RM100,000 or imprisonment from six months to five years, or both, upon conviction.

Tan and Chia pleaded guilty to their respective offences while Wong claimed trial.

Che Wan Zaidi then slapped a fine of RM30,000 in default six months' imprisonment against Tan and RM15,000 in default three months' jail on Chia.

He also fixed May 6 for the next mention of Wong's case.

Housing and Local Government Ministry legal division DPP Nor Iffa Zarilla Abd Rahman prosecuted while the three men were not represented.

Both Tan and Chia paid their fines.
