84 IT experts nabbed in gambling raid

SUBANG JAYA: Police have busted a syndicate suspected to be involved in developing online gambling platforms for overseas markets.

Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said 84 suspects, one of them a Thai national, were arrested following a raid on a unit in One City in Jalan USJ 25/1 on Monday.“All the suspects were IT experts with computer science qualifications and were hired by the gambling syndicate.

“They were paid between RM5,000 and RM20,000 per month to build online gambling platforms.

“The platform was meant for overseas markets such as Thailand, Brazil, China and Vietnam. This also means that the syndicate has ties with other criminal syndicates in those countries,” he told a press conference here yesterday.

Comm Hussein said the call centre here had been in operation since last year.

Several of those arrested had also been detained in previous operations, he said, adding that it is believed the suspects knew they were involved in illicit business.

Comm Hussein also said normally, police would bust business-to-customer centres. However, this was a rare business-to-business operation..
