PETALING JAYA: Dry and hot weather with temperatures exceeding 35°C are expected in most places in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah in the next seven days, says the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).
In Sarawak, thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rain and strong winds are expected in the afternoon and may persist until morning, it said in a statement yesterday.
MetMalaysia advised members of the public to refer to its website at www.met.gov.my and social media platforms or download the myCuaca app to get the latest accurate weather information.
Checks on the National Water Commission’s war room site revealed that the water levels at dams in Perlis, Kedah, Penang and Johor had reached the warning level.
In Perlis, the Timah Tasoh dam was at 59.72% capacity.
In Kedah, the Muda dam was at 47.8% capacity, followed by BS Padang Saga (59.83%) and Malut (45.8%).
In Penang, water levels at the Air Hitam dam hit the warning level with 37.7% capacity.
In Johor, the Sembrong Barat dam was at 34.79% capacity.
At 4.30pm yesterday, MetMalaysia also issued a Level 1 heatwave alert in many places such as Kuala Lumpur and also all of Perlis.
In Kedah, Level 1 heatwave alert was issued for Padang Terap, Sik, Kota Setar, Pendang, Kuala Muda and Baling.
Pokok Sena was reduced to Level 1 status yesterday after initially receiving a Level 2 warning the day before.
Hulu Perak, Kuala Kangsar and Kinta in Perak were issued Level 1 alerts. Kampar was removed from the Level 1 heatwave warning.
In Pahang, the locations affected were Raub and Temerloh.
A Level 2 warning is issued whenever temperatures hover between 37°C and 40°C over three consecutive days.
A Level 1 alert is issued when temperatures at a particular location are between 35°C and 37°C over three days.
