Education Ministry reveals steps to tackle learning loss

PUTRAJAYA: The Academic Session Final Test (UASA) mastery level system will be done using a percentage and grade structure from this year, says Fadhlina Sidek.

The Education Minister said this decision was made after evaluating feedback from parents, teachers and other stakeholders about the current curriculum that has become an issue.

She also said classroom-based assessment (PBD) reporting will be simplified and accessible online by parents via the Integrated Assessment Management System.

“The PBD mastery level report will be simplified while the UASA mastery level report for all subjects will be changed to the form of percentage and grade,” she said here on Monday (March 18) when announcing the ministry’s curriculum intervention to address learning loss among schoolchildren.

She also said Year One pupils will undergo a literacy and numeracy detection programme to identify those who have not mastered the 3M skills of reading, writing and counting.

Other measures announced by Fadhlina include the KSSR Alignment Document (Revision 2017) Edition 3 for Science and Mathematics Level One subjects.

“The curriculum alignment involves updating and reorganising subject content for existing Level One Science and Mathematics lessons,” she said.

Level One covers Years One to Three.

Fadhlina said the document is provided as an option for teachers in the implementation of the primary school curriculum and can be used together with the Level One Science and Mathematics Guidance Module.

She said the ministry is focusing on Science and Mathematics for now, with Bahasa Malaysia and English next.

She added that the information will be disseminated to all primary school Science and Mathematics teachers through workshops and training.

“These are the interventions to the current curriculum for us to balance and give space to our teachers, parents and pupils to master (the subjects), especially Mathematics and Science,” she said.

She stressed that the new curriculum will only commence in 2027.
