Govt 'technicalities' must not disrupt chicken and egg supply, says Dr Wee

PETALING JAYA: The supply of chicken and eggs should not be disrupted because of government "technicalities", says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

The MCA president said he held a meeting in Johor Baru recently with the Johor Small and Medium Poultry Farmers Association, led by its president Lim Ka Cheng, deputy treasurer Ho Tong Ceng and internal auditor Wong Chung Yuong.

"A few days ago, I brought up the issues and problems faced by poultry farmers in the special chamber of the Dewan Rakyat and today's discussion focused on the long-term solutions to their problems," said The MCA president in a Facebook post on Saturday (March 17).

He said the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry requires chicken farmers to apply for planning permission with local authorities, even if the coops are located outside the council's area.

"In addition, the ministry requires all entrepreneurs to adopt the concept of closed cages according to the set period.

"What is important is the supply of chickens and eggs must be sufficient and any compliance with the government's latest directives will not disrupt the supply of these items and increase production costs dramatically in order to comply with the technical requirements," added the Ayer Hitam MP.
