MELAKA: The state recorded a gross domestic product (GDP) of RM45.5bil in 2022, compared to RM41.9bil in 2021, says Tun Dr Mohd Ali Rustam.

The Yang di-Pertua Negeri said Melaka also recorded a growth trajectory of 8.6% in 2022, while per capita income increased to RM50,407 in the same year from RM44,679 in 2021 with the service sector as the the highest contributor to the state's economy amounting to RM23bil or 50.5% of the total rate.

"The second highest was the manufacturing sector with RM16.9bil or 37.2% followed by the agricultural industry with RM4.5bil (10%) and the construction sector with RM943mil (2.1%)," he said during a speech at the opening of the state assembly sitting on Tuesday (March 5).

Mohd Ali also urged the state's investment body to play an important role to ensure foreign direct investment (FDI) keeps flowing into the state.

He said the body should strengthen its relationship with other state and federal departments to expedite procedures and facilitate the needs of investors.

Mohd Ali also called upon local universities to remain consistent in their research and development frameworks to ensure a sustainable source of revenue for the state.

He said empowerment of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) should also be intensified, especially by getting the younger generation to be actively involved.

"Hence, I urge all TVET institutions in the state to contribute significantly in developing talents and high-level skills among students, as well as diversifying related courses," he added.

Also present were Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh and Melaka assembly Speaker Datuk Ibrahim Durum.
