Syariah Courts Act Amendment Bill (RUU355) likely to be tabled this year, says Mohd Na'im


KUALA LUMPUR: Engagement sessions for proposed amendments (under RUU355) to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act are almost concluded, with a report to be presented to the Cabinet before its expected tabling in Parliament later this year, says Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar.

The Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) said the engagement sessions would be conducted by the of the Islamic Development Department's (Jakim) legal division.

"All the states, including the state Islamic religious councils, the state syariah courts, and the state Islamic religious departments have been invited to participate," he said.

He added that Jakim director-general Datuk Hakimah Mohd Yusoff had told him that the engagement sessions are at the final stage.

Mohd Na'im was speaking at a press conference after the launch of the MAIWP 2024 Carnival by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim here on Sunday (Feb 18) morning.

Previous media reports indicated that a draft of the bill was being reviewed by the Attorney General's Department but it was not tabled before Parliament was dissolved on Oct 10, 2022. – Bernama
