TAWAU: Tawau Port has acquired two new quay cranes costing RM70mil to speed up cargo handling and accommodate larger vessels and rising trade volumes.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the investment was part of efforts by Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd (SPSB) to modernise critical port infrastructure and support Sabah’s long-term economic growth.
“Once operational, the cranes are expected to enhance productivity, operational reliability and overall cargo-handling efficiency at Tawau Port.
“They will support faster vessel turnaround, reduce waiting time and strengthen the port’s ability to accommodate larger vessels and growing cargo volumes,” he said at a ceremony marking the acquisition here on Sunday (Aug 2).
Hajiji said an efficient and reliable port system was vital to the growth of key sectors, particularly export-oriented industries that contribute significantly to Sabah’s economy.
He said the upgrading would reinforce Tawau Port’s position as an important maritime gateway on Sabah’s east coast while improving domestic and regional connectivity.
He also commended SPSB, Suria Capital Holdings Bhd and other parties involved for their commitment to strengthening the state’s maritime infrastructure.
Suria Capital chairman Datuk Seri Abd Rahman Dahlan said the investment reflected the group’s long-term commitment to strategic infrastructure development.
“Tawau Port plays an important role in supporting trade, industry and regional connectivity on Sabah’s east coast.
“This RM70mil investment reflects our commitment to equipping the port with the infrastructure and equipment required to meet future trade demands and contribute to the economic development of Tawau and the surrounding region,” he said.
Suria Capital and SPSB group managing director Datuk Ahmad Rizal Dahli said the acquisition was part of continued efforts to modernise and strengthen Tawau Port.
He said the cranes would improve cargo-handling efficiency, services to port users and support Sabah’s evolving trade and logistics needs.
Also present were Deputy Chief Minister III and Industrial Development, Entrepreneurship and Transport Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick, State Secretary Datuk Zainudin Aman and Sabah Ports Authority chairman Datuk Donald Mojuntin.
