IPOH: A responsible government must have the courage to craft policies and undertake programmes even if these are not popular moves, says Datuk Seri Amwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said policies or programmes created must have the interest and the future of the country in mind.

“If we chose to maintain popularity at the expense of the nation, then Madani will be off-course.

“Leadership is about having courage and to take responsibility,” he said.

Otherwise, the next generation would suffer, he said in closing the Perak Unity Government Convention yesterday.

Anwar said the present time was the perfect opportunity for the government to make changes for the betterment of the country and its people.

“This is the time that the government has a strong majority in Parliament. If we want to make any changes, we need to do it now,” he added.

Separately, Anwar said resolutions from the Bumiputra Economic Congress, which will be held at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre from Feb 29 to March 2, would also be used to help other races.

He said issues faced by the bumiputra were faced by the other races as well.

“The congress will identify problems confronting the non-bumiputra.

“We need to tackle these issues together and make it a big agenda,” he said.

Anwar said two “monster” projects in Perak would be expedited.

These, he said, included the Kerian Hi-tech Park, which would be based on green technology.

“The development of facilities for utilities like water and electricity will be expedited,” he said, adding that huge investments would be put in to get the facilities up and running.

“If there is extra water, it can be sold to Penang,” he said.

The other project, he said, was to build the biggest state police contingent headquarters not just in Perak but in the peninsula as well.

In a Facebook post, Anwar said that he is committed to reforming the country’s economy to raise the living standards of the people.

He said the targeted subsidy programme, Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara), announced last week, was one of such moves.
