All pumped up over Wan Junaidi’s appointment

KUCHING: New Sarawak Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar can take the state to greater heights with his knowledge, ability and experience, say state leaders and an analyst.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said Wan Junaidi’s experience made him the most appropriate person to be the new head of state.

“His experience is important for this stage of Sarawak’s nation building as we work on the Malaysia Agreement 1963 negotiations for health and education autonomy, special grants for Sarawak under Article 112D of the Federal Constitution, and one-third parliamentary seats for Sabah and Sarawak,” he said.

State Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said Wan Junaidi was highly qualified to be the Governor with his experience, capability and credibility.

She said the people in her constituency of Dalat were happy with his appointment as he had helped with a coastal retaining wall project that had been put on hold.

Wan Junaidi, 77, was appointed the eighth head of state yesterday for a four-year term.

He takes over from Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud, who had held the post for three terms from March 1, 2014.

Political scientist Awang Azman Awang Pawi said Wan Junaidi’s appointment was important in light of Sarawak’s aspiration to become a developed state by 2030.

“With his wide knowledge and ability, Wan Junaidi will be able to give advice to the state government on this matter.

“He can be an icon to Sarawakians as a highly educated person who has overcome challenges to achieve success in his career,” he said.

Awang Azman also said Wan Junaidi was well known in Commonwealth countries for his work in matters related to the law and Constitution.

“He’s the complete package. He is not only well known in Sarawak but will set a new benchmark of being known internationally,” he added.

On Abdul Taib stepping down, he said the institution of governor was more important than individuals.

“Leaders come and go but the institution remains and should be maintained and enhanced.”

Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap, who worked with Wan Junaidi in the latter’s law firm, said the new Governor was a man of few words who got things done.

“His priority has always been on the welfare of his clients when he was a lawyer and the rakyat when he was serving as an MP.”
