Malaysia believes Spanish court will deliver justice in ex-arbitrator Stampa's trial

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia has full faith in the Spanish criminal justice system and the importance of legal proceedings in preserving the integrity of the international commercial arbitration system, says Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.

The Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reforms) said this in Madrid, Spain, where the trial for Dr Gonzalo Stampa is taking place.

"I am at the Criminal Court of Madrid, where proceedings have begun against Stampa, the arbitrator responsible for the Sulu arbitration case.

"Malaysia has full faith in the Spanish criminal justice system.

"Madrid's Criminal Court will hear details of Stampa's contempt of court and repeated disobedience of the Madrid High Court's order, which annulled his appointment as an arbitrator," she said on X on Monday (Dec 11).

It was reported that the Malaysia government hopes that the Madrid Court will on Monday (Dec 11) sentence Stampa, who is facing charges for "unqualified professional practice" after controversially ordering Malaysia to pay US$14.92bill to the self-proclaimed heirs of the so-called Sulu Sultanate.

Azalina also previously said she was a little apprehensive about the trial because Stampa is an influential individual in Madrid.
