Company director arrested for bribing ministry official

PUTRAJAYA: A company director has been arrested for allegedly giving a RM17,000 bribe to a ministry official to expedite payment of subsidy claims for chicken and eggs worth about RM600mil.

Also arrested was a member of his staff, who is in his 30s.

It is learnt that the director, who is also the president of an association, was arrested at around 6.30pm on Thursday (Oct 19) after he was summoned to give his statement at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters here.

Sources said that since May, subsidy payments amounting to RM600mil had been paid involving 300-odd poultry breeders and egg producers nationwide.

Magistrate Irza Zulaikha Rohanuddin allowed for the suspect to be remanded for three days until Sunday (Oct 22).

The second suspect was released on bail.

MACC senior director of investigation Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hashim confirmed the arrest.
