Body of newborn found in Tawau hospital toilet

KOTA KINABALU: The body of newborn baby boy has been found in a toilet cistern in a hospital in Tawau.

The newborn's body, with the umbilical cord attached, was found by a cleaner in the women's toilet in the emergency ward of the district hospital.

Tawau police chief Asst Comm Jasmin Hussin said the 54-year-old woman found the body at 7.10am on Saturday (Oct 14) and reported it to hospital authorities.

"Investigations found the boy was discarded into the tank just after he was born," he said in a statement on Sunday (Oct 15).

Efforts are underway to identify the mother.

ACP Jasmin urged those with information pertaining to the baby-dumping case to come forward.

The case is being probed under Section 318 of the Penal Code for secretly disposing of the dead body of a child.
