KUALA LUMPUR: A scam call centre posing as three welfare organisations asking for donations has been busted by the police.
The call centre in Kepong was raided on Wednesday (Oct 4) afternoon by police from the Sentul Commercial Crime Investigation Department and 55 locals were arrested.
City police chief Comm Datuk Allaudeen Abdul Majid said they conducted the raid following intelligence gathered at around 3pm on Oct 4.
"We arrested 34 men and 21 women aged between 18 and 42 years old, all believed to be involved in a scam to collect donations.
"We also seized 54 laptops, 126 mobile phones, 108 receipt books as well as two internet routers," he said, adding that scripts and recorded conversations with victims were also found in one of the laptops seized.
He said checks revealed the syndicate members posed as representatives of three welfare organisations and used seven bank accounts to collect donations.
"We also found posts on Facebook by the syndicate calling for more donations.
"The syndicate members are believed to have received between 10% and 20% commission from the donations collected from victims if they hit the targets set by the syndicate," he said, adding that the suspects have been remanded to help with further investigations.
He said police will be investigating the three associations to see if there were any links to the syndicate.
"We believe the syndicate has been operating for at least five years.
"Let this be a warning to the syndicates out there that we will not rest until we take you down," he said.
