Important to keep your word, Muda No. 2 reminds Pakatan of anti-graft struggle

ISKANDAR PUTERI: Muda deputy president Amira Aisya Abd Aziz has reminded her former allies in Pakatan Harapan about the importance of keeping the promises they made to the people.

She added that the mandate given to Pakatan, including Muda, during the Johor state election and the 15th General Election (GE15) last year was based upon the reform agenda and struggle against corruption.

“It is important for Muda to uphold the promises to the people before, during and after the election.

“Many people are saying that Muda is going against the promise we made during the election as we are no longer (allied) with Pakatan now.

“But it is not Muda that has not kept its promise.

"The promise we made is not about loyalty to a coalition but our struggle against corruption, and we will never turn our back on it,” the Puteri Wangsa representative told the media after the Johor state assembly meeting here on Thursday (Sept 14).

She added that in GE15 and the state election last year, both Pakatan and Muda campaigned against corruption but now some promises were not being kept.

“Some quarters are saying Muda should vacate its seats for going back on its promise... (but really) who should be vacating their seats?" she asked.

Amira Aisya added that she still considered the people from Pakatan as her friends because in politics, no one is friend or foe forever.

She also said Muda did not mind being in the Opposition bloc as the country needs better checks and balances to the government instead of just focusing on narrow politics.

On Sunday (Sept 10), Muda said it was pulling out of the unity government, but pledged to support Bills that require a two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat.

Its president and Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said this was to protest the discharge not amounting to an acquittal granted to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in his Yayasan Akalbudi graft case.

Following this, the government fell one seat short of a two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat.
