State polls: Cops announce road closures in George Town on Nomination Day

GEORGE TOWN: Several main roads will be temporarily closed for Nomination Day on Saturday (July 29), says George Town OCPD Asst Comm Sofian Santong.

The main roads affected will be near four nomination centres in the north-east district and they will be closed from 7am until the nomination process is completed.

"The centres and road closures are at Kompleks Masyarakat Penyayang, Jalan Utama; Dewan Sri Pinang at Jalan Tun Syed Sheikh Barakbah; Penang Free School on Jalan Masjid Negeri; and SMJK Chung Hwa Confucian at Jalan Tingkat Tembaga and Lebuhraya Tembaga," he told a press conference at George Town police headquarters on Thursday (July 27).

ACP Soffian said Jalan Masjid Negeri will be closed in stages in front of Penang Free School.

He said the closure is to ensure that the nomination process is conducted smoothly and to ease traffic congestion at the nomination centres.

He advised the public to park their cars responsibly and plan their journey on that day.

ACP Soffian said he had also briefed candidates and party representatives as well as election managers about the regulations to observe.

He said a total of 1,060 police personnel will be deployed in the district on Nomination Day at eight nomination centres involving 13 state seats.

He also advised parties and candidates to practice mature politics and not to engage in any kind of provocation during the nomination process.
