State polls: Stop racial, religious politics, says Tiong

SIBU: Racial and religious politicking should be stopped as it goes against the fabric of Malaysia's multi-racial society, says Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

The Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister said that with state polls looming, such tactics should be stopped.

Speaking at the ministry's Gawai Ngiling Bidai (Gawai closing) gathering on Friday (July 7) night, he said that it is better for political parties to explain what they can do to help the people survive through the difficult recession period.

The state elections in Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Penang, Kedah, Terengganu and Kelantan will be held on Aug 12.

"What can we do to help the people and the country in facing the difficult times due to the uncertainty of the global economy at this time? What services can we provide and what initiatives can be introduced to help the people," said Tiong in his speech.

To me, this is better than gaining support by dirty means like communal politics," said Tiong in his speech read out by deputy Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan.

He added that some are campaigning by inciting racial and religious hatred, and then cited the Ngiling Bidai ceremony as an example of racial and religious harmony in Sarawak that he is proud of.

This is a beautiful and interesting culture. This uniqueness will attract many visitors to our state. I hope and will work to make this unique to Malaysia, in line with the concept of Malaysia Madani that is being pushed by the unity government," said the Bintulu MP.
