Kedah Sultan consents to State Assembly dissolution on June 28

ALOR SETAR: Kedah Ruler Sultan Kedah Al-Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah has consented to the dissolution of the State Assembly on June 28.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said this after an audience with the Sultan on Sunday (June 25) morning to seek the consent of His Royal Highness for the dissolution of the State Assembly.

"His Royal Highness has given his consent for the 14th state legislative assembly to be dissolved on Wednesday (June 28)," he said in a statement on Sunday (June 25).

He said with the Sultan's consent, the state government would be run by a caretaker administration from June 28.

He added that all government roles would continue as usual until the new state government is formed.

Muhammad Sanusi then thanked state secretary Datuk Paduka Amar Datuk Sheikh Mahmood Naim and federal agencies in the state for their cooperation since he was sworn in as Mentri Besar on May 17, 2020.

He also thanked the opposition for completing the parliamentary democracy in governing the state.

"My highest recognition to the people of Kedah who have supported the state government in every effort implemented," he said.

Muhammad Sanusi added that that the state executive councilors have also played vital roles in the daily affairs of state administration.

He said during his tenure, the state was hit by two terrible natural disasters - the occurrences of water head in Yan and Kuala Muda districts as well as the flood in Kampung Iboi, Baling.

"The tests were hard but the state administration handled it well.

"We were able to successfully face these tests thanks to the concern and caring nature of His Majesty the Sultan, His Majesty the Sultanah and Raja Muda who often gave advice and reminded me to ensure that the people's lives are the utmost priority," he said.

Earlier, Muhammad Sanusi was seen entering Wisma Darul Aman here at 10.22am while Sultan Sallehuddin arrived four minutes later.

On June 15, he said that June 28 was the date of dissolution proposed by the state government.

A total of 36 seats will be up for grabs in the coming Kedah polls, which are likely to be held in August.

PAS has the most seats with 15, followed by Bersatu (six), PKR (five), Amanah (three) and two each for Umno, DAP and Pejuang.

Six states, namely Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, Penang, Selangor and Negri Sembilan, are expected to hold their respective state polls in the coming weeks.
