SERDANG: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will look into the issue involving a company linked to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's son receiving a contract for RM214.2mil 20 years ago if there are elements of corruption, says Tan Sri Azam Baki.
The chief commissioner said the MACC would investigate if a report is lodged and found to have elements of graft.
"We will not hesitate to investigate. However, so far, I have not received any information on the matter but if there is a credible report that indicates corruption, we will carry out a probe," he said.
Azam told reporters this after launching the Malaysia Corruption Watch (MCW) annual general meeting at Universiti Putra Malaysia on Saturday (June 17).
Datuk Seri Dr Puad Zakarshi had urged the MACC to investigate the former premier on the revelation that a company linked to his son received a contract for RM214.2mil, 20 years ago.
The Umno supreme council member said this after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim alleged in his defence statement at the Shah Alam High Court on Thursday (June 15) that Opcom Sdn Bhd received the contract when Dr Mahathir's third son Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, was a director of the company.
In a Facebook post on Friday (June 16), Puad said the statement by Anwar was a serious matter and MACC should reopen the old case.
"The Prime Minister has shown courage with his statement and Dr Mahathir should be investigated," Puad said.
Anwar said Telekom Malaysia Bhd had issued a letter to the Finance Ministry seeking permission to engage in direct negotiations with Opcom in 2003.
