Wan Junaidi nominated as Dewan Negara president

PETALING JAYA: Tan Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has been nominated for the post of Dewan Negara president.

"The post can only be accepted by way of consent by the person nominated.

"In this regard, it will give me the opportunity to continue with my previous work of bringing reforms to Parliament which I had intended to do," he said when contacted on Friday (June 16).

Wan Junaidi said he was informed by the government three days ago of his nomination.

He added that he is looking to get support from the government and parliamentarians to reform the august House in his tenure as Senate president.

Wan Junaidi, who was previously the minister in charge of Parliament and law, is tipped to replace Tan Sri Rais Yatim whose tenure ended on Thursday (June 15).

Wan Junaidi had also held several key Cabinet posts under previous administrations including Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker from 2008 until 2013.

He was Batang Lupar MP from 1990 till 2004.

Wan Junaidi subsequently won the Santubong parliamentary seat in the 2008 general election and was its MP until 2022.

He did not contest in the 15th General Election.
