ALOR SETAR: Chin Yoon Foo, 70, received the "Meritorious Service Award 2022" from the Badminton World Federation (BWF) on Sunday (May 28).

The sole Malaysian to pick up the award this year said it was a recognition of his service to badminton over the past 40 years.

Chin had previously worked with Star Media Group for 11 years from 1997 to 2008, retiring as its northern hub office manager.

The award was presented to him by BWF vice-president Jassen Kanso on the sidelines of the Malaysian Masters 2023 final at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.

"The award was presented to me in recognition of my service in badminton for the past 40 years.

"To qualify for the award, the candidate must have served a badminton association continuously for more than 15 years and also helped to organise international events.

"I was recommended for the award by Kedah Badminton Association (KBA) president Datuk Teoh Teng Chor to the Badminton Association Malaysia (BAM).

"BAM then forwarded the recommendation to the BWF.

"I feel proud to be given the honour to receive this award and would like to share it with all the KBA council members," he said.

Chin joined KBA in 1983 and was elected as the vice-president, a position he still holds today.

He is currently the chairman of the tournament sub-committee of KBA.

He was a Special Branch inspector based at the Regional Border Committee Office (RBCO) in Yala, southern Thailand, for 11 years and served in the police for a total of 23 years before joining Star Media Group.
