MELAKA: Melaka aims to implement the No Microwave Policy within five years in the state to strengthen the capacity and stability of the telecommunications network through the use of high-capacity optical fibre.
The policy aims to phase out microwave technology as a telecommunications transmission method.
Melaka ICT Holdings Sdn Bhd (MICTH) chief executive officer Dr Nazdiana Ab Wahab said that the efforts to achieve this target will be strengthened by increasing the proportion of the company's telecommunications towers equipped with fibre-optic networks from 40 per cent to 80 per cent.
Towards this end, MICTH and Maxis Berhad have signed a cooperation agreement to complete 151 additional telecommunications towers with high-capacity fibre-optic networks in phases starting this year.
"We hope that once we have provided high-capacity fibre-optic connections to 80 per cent of these telecommunications towers, we will move towards the No Microwave Policy in Melaka," she said after the document exchange ceremony between MICTH and Maxis Berhad here on Thursday (Aug 27).
The event was witnessed by Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh and state science, technology, innovation and digital communications committee chairman Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan.
Nazdiana said that so far, nearly 200 MICTH towers have been equipped with fibre optic networks, representing about 40 per cent of the company's total towers.
She said that the use of optical fibre as a backbone network can increase the capacity, speed, and stability of internet connections compared to microwave technology.
Fibre-optic technology has a greater capacity and more stable bandwidth, unlike microwave connections, which can be affected by weather factors and physical obstacles such as buildings or trees.
"Sometimes we see that an area has coverage, but the line is still slow due to capacity constraints.
"By using optical fibre as the backbone, we hope to increase capacity so that the internet connection becomes faster," she explained.
Nazdiana added that the fiberisation of the towers in question is expected to enhance the capacity and reliability of the telecommunications network in Melaka in line with current development and technological needs. – Bernama
