KOTA KINABALU: A vocational school team from here has won a gold award for their invention ‘Livoc Plastic Brick 2.0’ during a global competition in Bali, Indonesia recently.
Kolej Vokasional (KV) Likas won first place for the technology category for college and higher institution level during the International Science, Technology and Engineering competition (ISTEC 2023) held on May 11 to 14.
ISTEC is an event where participants from around the world compete through an exhibition of the results of research, inventions and innovations.
The KV Likas team consisted of Nur Izzrahatul Ronnie, Nurafiqah Syazwana Mohd Yusri and Nuralyianah Abu Bakar from Year 2 of the Construction Programme, along with their supervisor Ts Rosman Pileh, according to a statement from the vocational school.
Also accompanying them during the competition was KV Likas head of quality assurance Kalaimagal KSS Nathan.
“This innovation is the use of plastic and oil palm waste in the making of interlocking bricks.
“The judges who were from South Africa and Indonesia, were impressed with the eco-friendly aspect of the innovation.
“Participating in innovation competitions like this, is vital for Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET),” said KV Likas director Mokhtar Ibrahim in the statement.
He added the experience gained in such a competition overseas is a bonus for these young students, and has motivated other students and teachers to get involved.
“However, the biggest challenge was obtaining funds especially when the competition is held overseas.
“Therefore, we thanked the Deputy State Secretary for Special Tasks (Sapdin Ibrahim), Parents Teachers Association of KV Likas and all relevant parties who enabled the college to send the team to Bali.
“I hoped this will be the beginning of many more to come for KV Likas, as the way forward for the younger generation in TVET is via innovation,” added Mokhtar.
