Sabah capital, west coast hit by power outages for second day

KOTA KINABALU: Parts of the state capital here and west coast areas have been affected by power outages for a second day.

After a massive power outage on Tuesday (May 16) which left people in the area without any electricity for up to five hours, consumers experienced a second round of power failures in many areas in Kota Kinabalu, Penampang and Putatan around 6pm on Wednesday (May 17).

Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) in a statement on Facebook said that they were facing technical problems with high voltage power lines.

It added that measures were being taken to restore power supply in stages to affected locations.

In another post, SESB said some areas in Kudat were also hit by power disruption and they were identifying the source of the problem, with restoration to be done in stages.

Due to the blackout, many motorists were caught in traffic jams in different parts of the city here and Penampang as traffic lights were not working.

Social media also had claims that people were stuck briefly in lifts at a mall while the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) here had to switch to generators and elevators could not be used.

Lawyer Chin Tek Ming, in a statement, said SESB should take full responsibility for the blackout, including compensating its consumers.

"It is unacceptable that the blackouts around Kota Kinabalu and other places in Sabah have been so frequent.

"This has caused disturbance and inconvenience to the lives of the public at large," said Chin.
