GEORGE TOWN: Concerned for the welfare of pupils at SK Seri Permai here, its parent-teacher association (PTA) gave out school uniforms and other necessities to about 200 needy students.

Its chairman Sharizal Md Noor said even free hair cuts were given when the new school session reopened on March 20.

“This year was the second year we organised this programme for needy students,” he said.

He said pupils blessed with this benefit came from M40 families and below.

He said during Covid-19’s movement control order, many parents lost their sources of income and the idea of organising this programme started last year.

The PTA received contributions from other parents, the school alumni and the public to provide this aid.

“We donated about RM2,500 to buy stationery, school bags, sports attire and other needful items for the deserving kids,” he said, adding that the school had about 1,500 pupils.

He said with the rising cost of living, it was important for entities like the PTA to step forward and do as much as they can to help the needy.

He added that the school’s PTA was also planning on giving Hari Raya clothes to needy pupils.

At SRJK(C) Li Tek A, B and Cawangan, some 200 pupils received school uniforms, school bags, socks and shoes from Li Tek Ex-Pupils Association.

Association secretary Lee Thuan Chye said the campaign had been running for 10 years.

“Our main purpose is to help the schools boys and girls who are in need,” he said.

He said 30 children at Heng Ee Kindergarten in Lintang Macallum also benefited from the programme after each received RM100 to buy exercise books and other items.

Lee said the total fund raised this year was RM38,220 which came from the school’s alumni and the public.
