MELAKA: A carnival to explore the possibility of blending Chinese Peranakan food and fashion with other cultures will be held at a leading shopping complex here this Saturday (March 25).

Organising chairman Vendy Hiew said the event will be a platform to hone the talents of Baba and Nyonya to blend their cuisines and traditional outfits with contemporary lifestyles.

“This is our first attempt to see whether our idea of creating a fusion between Peranakan and other cultures as well as Western concepts, materialises,” she said after holding a press conference to announce details of the event themed “Nyonya Heritage '' at an outlet in Jonker Walk here on Tuesday (March 21).

IBF World Heritage Gourmet president Dr Dillion Yap who is a co-organiser of the event was also present during the press conference.

Hiew said her intention for organising the event was to preserve the heritage and keep it thriving — especially by having close ties to other local cultures.

“This is my first project to make a difference in Chinese Peranakan heritage by interconnecting with the traditions of other communities.

“I am confident of making the event a successful one,” she said.

Hiew said the event is also in line with the increased interest in Chinese Peranakan culture and also to attract the younger generation from the community to cherish their heritage.

“Food and clothing speak to identity and I am trying to venture beyond the traditional boundaries to promote a modern Peranakan lifestyle,” she said.

Hiew said the event aims to provide an opportunity for cultural enthusiasts brimming with ideas on how to promote a new trend of Peranakan cuisine and fashion.
