Transport Ministry wants to open up payment options for public transport

SEPANG: More payment options will be introduced for public transport soon, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

"I have ordered all our agencies under the ministry, as well as operators, to implement an open payment system.

He said for example, LRT users only have two options – which is to buy a token from the vending machine or use the Touch 'n Go payment system.

"We want to roll out an open payment system where users can also tap their debit or credit card to go in.

"This is being implemented. It will take some time to integrate the system," he said at a press conference after officiating the grand opening of Plaza Premium Lounge at KLIA on Monday (March 20).

He said the system would be rolled out within the next few months, especially for services under Prasarana Malaysia Bhd as well as Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd.

He was asked to comment on whether the services of the Touch 'n Go system would end.

This came after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's remarks at the Youth Empowerment Fair on March 19 where he said the government would reconsider its monopoly of highway toll collection given the lack of convincing progress for the service.

"We are not ending Touch 'n Go. It stays. Let's not sound as if we want to kill it. Touch 'n Go will not be terminated," said Loke.

He said Touch 'n Go would remain as one of the several payment options available to commuters.
