GEORGE TOWN: Several roads in the city will be closed in stages on Saturday (March 11) for the annual Chingay festival.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong said the festival would begin at 7pm on Saturday and will start at Johor Road next to Padang Brown and will finish in front of the State Legislature Assembly building on Light Street.

"Among the roads that will be involved in the closure will be Dato Keramat Road, Burmah Road, Transfer Road, Sri Bahari Road, Penang Road, Chulia Street, Masjid Kapitan Keling Road, Farquhar Street and Light Street," he said in a statement on Wednesday (March 8).

ACP Soffian said on March 11, Padang Kota Lama Road, Light Street, King Edward Roundabout and Masjid Kapitan Keling would be closed completely from 1pm to 5pm.

He said other roads would be closed if required to make way for the festival to run smoothly with some 10,000 visitors expected to attend the festivals.

He said Penang Island City Council (MBPP) would also provide parking spaces at Union Street, Beach Street, King Street, Penang Street, Downing Street, and King Edward Roundabout.

He advised motorists to plan their journey so that they would not be trapped in traffic congestion during the festival.

He said the police also hoped the public would give full cooperation to the police for the smooth traffic flow in the city.
