Penang Port introduces first vessel traffic management system

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Port Commission (PPC) has implemented its first Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS) as part of efforts to enhance safety, efficiency and sustainability at Penang Port.

In a statement, PPC chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said the system marks a new milestone in the port's transformation into a smart port.

He said the VTMS will function as a central command hub for maritime traffic in Penang waters, enabling real-time monitoring of vessel movements and improving navigational safety and traffic management.

"The implementation of VTMS represents a major milestone towards achieving safer, more efficient and sustainable port operations," he said.

The system integrates several technologies, including the Automatic Identification System (AIS), Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS), Very High Frequency Radio (VHF) and Electro-Optical Surveillance System (EOS).

Yeoh said Penang waters are a busy maritime corridor that accommodates cargo vessels, cruise ships, passenger ferries and other vessels daily.

"With maritime traffic becoming increasingly busy, the PPC has established a strong foundation through this system to address future challenges and to provide world-class services that meet international standards for our global trading partners.

"Penang Port will continue to drive innovation and elevate the overall standards of safety and operational efficiency at one of the nation's key maritime gateways. This is also one of the most significant milestones during my tenure as chairman of PPC in advancing the port towards becoming a smart port," he said.

He added that the VTMS will also support future infrastructure projects, including the proposed Light Rail Transit (LRT) line linking KOMTAR and Penang Sentral, by helping ensure the safe passage of vessels through the Penang Strait.

The initiative is in line with efforts to modernise and digitalise Malaysia's ports and strengthen the country's logistics and transportation infrastructure.
