PETALING JAYA: The poor quality of food given to flood victims – added to the fact that it is delivered late – is unacceptable, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
The Ayer Hitam MP said affected victims in his constituency received a small serving of food which appeared bland and lacking in nutrition.
In a video posted on his Facebook, Dr Wee said flood victims were given plain fried bihun for breakfast and rice with a small portion of cabbage and curry for lunch yesterday.
“The fried bihun was supposed to be for breakfast but they only received it at 11am while lunch was delivered after 2pm and the portion is so small!
“I am very disappointed. I can see that it is not being executed well,” he said.
The MCA president was at the SK Agama Taman Kota Yong Peng temporary flood relief centre where he visited 375 flood victims from 105 families.
In the two-minute, 40-second video, Dr Wee expressed dismay at the quality of food being distributed as the flood victims were already experiencing much hardship with their homes being flooded.
“In my constituency, there are 22 centres with 5,000 flood victims. I call upon the authorities to look after and prioritise their welfare,” he said.
Dr Wee also said the late delivery of food was unacceptable as some were down with gastritis after waiting for a long time for the meals to arrive.
“I have discussed this with the Village Development and Security Committee on the possibility of preparing the meals. It’s better to make our own meals.
“If the people are given such food, of course they will be upset,” he added.
In the caption accompanying the video, Dr Wee said he had also spoken to the minister responsible to improve the quality of food.
“If the caterer engaged to prepare the food cannot carry out the responsibility well, it should be given to the local village committee to take charge. Let them coordinate and organise the preparation of good and healthy food,” he added.
